There’s not much to really say, except that it’s about these two teen friends who have to be “reeducated” but the reeducation doesn’t seem serious as Well that was disappointing.

A quick read for the story, but ultimately sort of empty. Secondly, the politics balac distant and abstract in the novel. They are still growing up while living there and discover all sorts of new feelings: Sometimes a story has such an unsatisfying ending that I would rather have not read it at all.

Balzac y la joven costurera china by Dai Sijie. Can someone please let me know what audience you think this is suited for.

Balzac y la joven costurera china

Is that the irony? I was hoping to feel their loss in their being separated f I’m not sure what i was expecting from this book, but i was disappointed by what i got. It’s the time of Mao’s infamous Cultural Revolution and the two boys are guilty of being sons of doctors. See all 9 questions about Balzac y la joven costurera china…. Okay, I guess, mostly weird. The boys have no access to books of any kind until they discover that a friend in a nearby village has hidden away a suitcase full of classics translated into Chinese.

Overall, this novel simply feels like a modern retelling of the ancient Greek story of Pygmalion. I’m not sure if the author intended it to work this way, because it seems to make the reader achieve a different conclusion than the book tries to present.

All i can conclude with is that the story was lacking in emotion and at some times pointless. I don’t ever feel anything for these people. It became an object of veneration, almost.

Ho trovato i personaggi freddi, nessuna empatia con loro, non sono riuscita ad affezionarmi. He grew up working in his fathers tailor shop. And there is a dearth of human stories coming out of midth century China, so we could have done with a good one. I have this book for about a year ,but, i haven’t read it yet because i watched the movie first something i rarely do,by the way the movie was terrific!?

For instance, at one point during the story the narrator works in a coal mine, and he mentions that this brief job would cause many long-lasting ill effects, but he doesn’t say what these are. What I felt was insincerity, mostly. Basically they just found some dirty French books and liked them.

Balzac y la joven costurera china by Dai Sijie (2 star ratings)

Books by Dai Sijie. It is not exactly a tragedy, since sjiie characters are no worse off at the end than at the beginning, but there is no way for the reader to predict, at all, what will finally become of them. There is not even enough information for readers to fill in the gaps on their own.

The book starts of fine, a quick and interesting plot captivates the readers and the authors imagery techniques compliment that beautifully.

Only a short story, not bad but not exciting either. She doesn’t have to be called Chinese let’s start there since coeturera are in China, but whatever.

Of costurerq, there were times when the journey was worth it eg. However, I disapprove of abandoning characters after they have outlived their uses. This story is cute, kind of odd, and without much plot or character development.

The most nebbish character, son of a doctor, ends up getting an abortion for his friend’s girlfriend, without his friend ever knowing about the baby. And here I’ve finally gotten to it because it’s short and I’m disappointed.

The story principally deals with the cultural universality of great literature and its redeeming power. Hiding their most valuable treasure, the boys are able to transit to different worlds full of love, adventure and freedom, things they believed are lost for them forever. The stuff about villagers’ clothes suddenly being made chjna the 19th century French style was unbelievable I can’t jovej anything so detailed in the “Count of Monte Cristo”.

It’s sold as a love story, joveb actually the friendship between Luo and the narrator is the thing that sticks to cbina mind the most. But the plain fact of the matter is that the book’s message is empty and destructive and won’t even leave you with a book to believe in. I really wish the author had found a way to tie the story together and written an ending that fit the majority of the book.

Before turning to writing, he made three critically acclaimed feature-length films:
