Iain White Translator, Introduction. Then there’s a heavy dose of Greek mythological allegory thrown in, which is finally sort of explained at the end.
Powerless and terrified, I watched his vain struggle against the darkness of Malpertuis. It’s like reading the narrative of a crazy person, but it works! Really impressive, and a book–I suspect–that must have been read by later practitioners of the genre Phantoms of the mind?

How can you not love lines like this: Events occur that are so bizarre that Jean-Jacques doubts his own sanity. The malperrtuis me that much. I was just expecting something more brilliant and experimental, but this was entertaining enough, and I learned a couple new words. I can’t wait to read this book.

I just didn’t get the point of the whole thing, and while the atmosphere was creepy nothing at all happened and I got bored of it.

Haven’t read it, but I was quite taken with the early ’70s film adaptation, starring an ailing Orson Welles. Gothic prose, macabre similes, a creepy atmo I didn’t have any idea what to expect before reading this but did so solely on the basis of a recommendation from someone whose judgement I trusted and I knew nothing about it or the author.
